Feeling Unprepared for Birth? Here’s Your Easy Start-Now Checklist by Donna - Antenatal Classes Auckland

If you’re pregnant and feeling a little (or a lot) unprepared for birth — you’re so not alone. Honestly, most women don’t wake up feeling magically ready for labour.

Birth is a journey, and like any big adventure, a little bit of preparation goes a long way.

The good news?

You don’t need to have it all figured out today. But there are some simple, powerful things you can start doing right now to feel calm, confident, and in control when the big day arrives.

Grab yourself a cuppa (or a smoothie!) and let’s go through your easy start-now checklist.

1. Get Educated – Knowledge is Key

First things first, educate yourself about birth. I know, it can feel like there’s so much information out there, but don’t worry, it’s not about knowing everything. Focus on understanding the basics, like what happens in each stage of labour, your options for pain relief, and how your body works during birth.

This knowledge is your superpower! It’ll help you feel more in control and less anxious. You can take a class, read a book, or even listen to podcasts. Just start somewhere that feels manageable for you.

2. Prepare Your Body – Move, Stretch, Breathe

You’ve probably heard it a million times, but exercise during pregnancy really helps when it comes to labour. You don’t have to be a gym bunny or run marathons, but gentle exercises like pregnancy yoga or simple stretches can help keep your body strong, flexible, and prepared for the physical demands of birth.

Focus on movements that open your hips, encourage baby to settle into a good position, and help build your stamina. Your body is already amazing, but taking the time to nurture it can make the whole experience smoother.

3. Think About Your Birth Space

It’s easy to think about birth as something that just happens, but being mindful of your birth environment can make a big difference. Whether you’re giving birth at home or in a hospital, think about what will make you feel calm and safe during labour.

Is there anything you can do now to prepare that space? Maybe it’s packing your hospital bag, or creating a soothing playlist, or even just thinking about the kind of environment you want (dim lighting, comfy pillows, etc.). Taking a moment to mentally prepare your birth space can help you feel more in control when the time comes.

4. Get Your Birth Partner Involved

You’ve probably already heard this one, but it’s worth repeating: your birth partner can make a huge difference. It’s not just about who’s there with you in the room, it’s about feeling supported and understood.

Take some time to talk with your partner about what you both want from the experience, what role they can play, and how they can help you feel more confident. This could be something as simple as reminding you to breathe, or being your advocate if things don’t go to plan. Just knowing that you’re on the same team can help both of you feel more prepared.

5. Think About After the Birth

We spend so much time thinking about the birth itself, but don’t forget to consider the time after baby arrives. The first few days and weeks can feel like a blur, and being a little bit prepared can help you feel more confident when the time comes.

Think about practical things like where you’ll sleep, what you’ll need for baby, and how you can look after yourself during those early days. Knowing that you’ve got some basics sorted out can take a lot of pressure off.

6. Trust Your Instincts

Finally, trust yourself. There’s so much information out there about what you should do and how you should feel, but no one knows your body, your baby, or your unique situation like you do.

When the time comes, listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. If you need a break, take one. Trust that you have everything you need inside of you to make it through this experience.

So, what’s next?

Start with these simple steps and know that every little bit of preparation you do is one step closer to feeling more confident and ready for your big day. Remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out right away, but taking small, manageable steps will help you feel in control and ready when your baby arrives.
