What Do You Learn in Antenatal Classes? And Are They Really Worth It?

Do you really need antenatal classes when you can Google almost anything about birth?
It's a fair question. Between pregnancy apps, social media, podcasts and endless birth stories, there's certainly no shortage of information available.
But here's something I've learned from over 17 years of helping expectant parents prepare for birth:
Knowing about birth and knowing what to do during birth are two very different things.
And that's exactly why a good antenatal class can make such a difference.
What do you actually learn in antenatal classes?
Antenatal classes are designed to help you understand pregnancy, labour, birth and those first few weeks with your newborn.
Depending on the course, you might learn about:
The signs and stages of labour
When to call your midwife or head to hospital
Pain relief options, including epidurals
Induction of labour and caesarean birth
Breastfeeding and bottle feeding
Newborn care, settling and sleep
Physical and emotional recovery after birth
All useful information. But I believe antenatal education should go further.
Because when you're in the middle of a contraction, knowing the textbook definition of active labour isn't necessarily what you need.
You need practical tools. You need confidence. And ideally, you need a birth partner who knows how to support you.
Birth preparation is about more than information
At Soul Sisters Studios, we do what no other birth class does quite like us — we prepare you for birth, not just overload you with information.
Our antenatal workshops are practical, hands-on and designed to help you actually use what you learn.
We explore how movement, breathing, positioning and physical preparation can support you during labour.
You'll practise different labour and birth positions, discover ways your partner can help you feel more comfortable, and understand how to work with your body throughout the process.
Rather than simply talking about contractions, we explore what you can actually do when they happen.
Because confidence doesn't come from memorising everything that might happen.
It comes from feeling equipped to respond.
What will your birth partner learn?
One of the biggest surprises for many couples is just how important the birth partner's role can be.
And yet, so many partners arrive at antenatal classes unsure what they're supposed to do.
Should they massage your back? Remind you to breathe? Suggest a different position? Speak to the midwife?
In our workshops, partners get involved too.
We practise hands-on comfort techniques, explore useful labour positions and talk about how partners can offer practical and emotional support.
The goal isn't for your partner to become a birth expert.
It's for you to feel like a team.
What if your birth doesn't go to plan?
This is one of the most important parts of good antenatal education.
Birth is unpredictable.
You might experience a straightforward vaginal birth, need an induction, choose an epidural or have a planned or unplanned caesarean.
None of these outcomes means you've failed.
At Soul Sisters, we don't teach one 'right' way to give birth.
We help you understand your options, ask informed questions and prepare for different possibilities.
That means learning about medical interventions alongside practical birth preparation, without fear, judgement or pressure.
The goal isn't to control every part of your birth. It's to feel informed, supported and prepared for whatever direction it takes.
What about caring for your newborn?
Preparing for birth is important, but bringing your baby home is a whole new adventure.
That's why our antenatal classes also include newborn care and feeding preparation.
We cover practical topics such as:
Understanding your newborn's needs
Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding basics
Nappy changing and everyday baby care
Settling and soothing your baby
Preparing for the early postnatal weeks
We want you to leave feeling more confident about both birth and those first days as a new family.
Are antenatal classes worth the money?
If an antenatal class simply repeats information you could easily read online, it's understandable to question the value.
But a well-designed class offers something different.
You can ask questions, practise techniques, involve your partner and learn from an experienced educator in a supportive environment.
You also get the chance to meet other expectant parents who are navigating the same exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) stage of life.
For many couples, it's the first time they've really set aside a day to focus on preparing for birth together.
And that alone can be incredibly valuable, and dont just take my word for it check out our reviews!
