One of the most common questions I hear from pregnant women is:

"How do I know when it's time to go to hospital?"

And honestly?

It's a good question.

Because most women aren't worried about labour itself.

They're worried about getting the timing wrong.

Going too early.Going too late. Not recognising labour.

The good news is there are signs you can look for.

What Early Labour Usually Looks Like

  • Irregular contractions

  • Able to talk through contractions

  • Excited and chatty

  • Mild cramping

  • Able to rest, eat and move around

Explain that many women can stay home safely during this stage.

What Active Labour Usually Looks Like

  • Stronger contractions

  • Harder to talk through contractions

  • Need to stop and focus

  • Labour becoming more intense

  • Contractions becoming more regular

What Should You Do Before Going To Hospital?

  • Eat

  • Drink

  • Rest

  • Move

  • Time contractions

  • Stay in contact with your midwife

When Should You Call Your Midwife?

  • Contractions becoming regular

  • Waters breaking

  • Reduced movements

  • Any concerns

Always follow your individual care provider's advice.

Why Most Women Feel Unsure

Because labour doesn't always start the same way.

No two births are identical.

The goal isn't guessing.

The goal is understanding what labour looks like and having a plan.

How Antenatal Classes Help

This is one of the biggest reasons women book antenatal classes in Auckland.

Understanding:

  • labour stages

  • what to expect

  • when to call your midwife

  • when to go to hospital

helps you feel calmer and more confident.
