Nobody Talks About How Mentally Overwhelming Birth Can Feel - By Donna, Antenatal Classes Auckland

One of the biggest fears women quietly carry into birth?
“What if I panic?”
And honestly... I wish more people talked about this.
Because birth isn’t just physical.
It’s mental too.
The intensity. The unknown. The adrenaline. The “is this normal?” thoughts. The pressure. The decisions. The fear of losing control.
Nobody really prepares women for THAT part.
And I actually think that’s why so many women feel overwhelmed heading into labour.
Not because they’re weak. Not because they “can’t handle pain”.
But because birth feels mentally overwhelming when nobody has shown you what to DO.
When nobody has explained:– what labour normally feels like– when to stay home– when to call the midwife– what contractions are doing– how to cope when things feel intense– what’s normal– what’s not
Because calm in labour isn’t personality-based.
It’s preparation-based.
Most Women Don’t Need More Information
Honestly..... Most pregnant women are already consuming huge amounts of birth content.
You’re reading. Listening to podcasts. Watching reels. Saving TikToks. Reading birth stories at 2am.
But information alone doesn’t always create confidence.
In fact, sometimes it creates more overwhelm.
Because one person says:“Birth is magical.”
Another says:“Birth was traumatic.”
One says:“Stay home as long as possible.”
Another says:“Go in early.”
And suddenly you’re left thinking:“How am I supposed to know what’s right?”
That’s the missing piece for so many women.
Not more information.
Guidance.
Practical preparation. Understanding what’s happening. Knowing what to do next.
The Fear Of “Losing Control”
One of the biggest things women say in my antenatal classes in Auckland?
“I’m scared I’ll panic.”
And honestly? That fear makes complete sense.
Because labour can feel incredibly intense when:– you don’t know what’s normal– you don’t understand what your body is doing– you’re second-guessing yourself– you feel unsure what happens next
But something amazing happens when women understand labour properly.
Birth suddenly feels less chaotic.
Not because labour becomes easy…but because it becomes less unknown.
Understanding what contractions are doing changes things.
Understanding what early labour looks like changes things.
Understanding why movement matters changes things.
Understanding your options changes things.
Because confidence in birth usually comes from:“ I understand what’s happening.”
Not:“I hope I survive this.”
Birth Preparation Should Feel Practical
One thing I hear all the time from pregnant women is:
“I’ve done so much reading… but I still don’t feel ready.”
That’s because birth preparation is often missing the practical side.
Women are told:– “breathe”– “trust your body”– “relax”
But rarely taught HOW.
What do you actually DO when contractions start?
How do you cope in early labour?
What positions help?
What should your partner be doing?
When should you stay home?
What happens if labour changes direction?
That’s why inside my antenatal classes, I focus so heavily on practical tools.
Because birth feels much less scary when you have a plan.
Not a perfect birth plan.
A practical plan.
Your Partner Needs Preparation Too
One of the biggest sources of stress during labour?
Feeling unsupported.
And honestly, most partners are terrified too.
They’re worried about:– saying the wrong thing– not knowing how to help– watching you in pain– feeling helpless
That’s why good antenatal education should prepare BOTH of you.
Because birth works so much better when your partner understands:– what labour looks like– how to support you– how to keep you calm– what actually helps during contractions
And that changes the whole energy of birth.
The Goal Isn’t A Perfect Birth
I think social media has created this idea that if you prepare “properly”, birth will go exactly to plan.
But birth is unpredictable.
Sometimes labour changes direction.Sometimes interventions happen.Sometimes birth looks different than expected.
That doesn’t mean you failed.
The goal was never perfection.
The goal is walking into birth thinking:
“Okay…I know what’s happening. I know my options. I know what to do next.”
And honestly?
That changes everything.
I think every pregnant woman deserves birth education that makes her feel calmer — not more overwhelmed.
I think every pregnant woman deserves birth education that makes her feel calmer — not more overwhelmed.
The kind that helps you understand what’s happening. The kind that gives your partner practical ways to support you.The kind that makes birth feel less scary and more manageable.
That’s exactly why I created my antenatal classes here in Auckland.
Not to teach women how to have a “perfect birth”…but to help them walk into labour thinking:
“Okay… I know what to do next.”
I run small group antenatal classes across Auckland including
Ponsonby,
Silverdale,
North Shore Albany & Birkenhead,
Point Chevalier, — with practical tools, real-life guidance, and support for both you and your partner.
Because birth feels very different when you feel prepared 🤍
