The One Thing Most Women Don’t Do Before Birth (And It Makes Labour Harder)

I see this every single week in my antenatal classes.
Couples walk in thinking they’re preparing for birth…but they’re not actually preparing their body for it.
They’ve:→ read the books→ packed the bag→ maybe watched a few videos
But when I ask:“What are you doing to physically prepare your body for labour?”
Most people go quiet.
And this is the part that makes the biggest difference.
The truth
Birth isn’t something that just happens to your body. It’s something your body does.
And like anything physical —👉 it works better when your body is prepared.
Think of your pelvis like a lock…and your baby like the key.
Your baby is trying to turn, move, and find the best way out.
But if your body is:→ tight→ restricted→ not moving well
…it can make that process harder than it needs to be.
What most women focus on instead
Most preparation focuses on:→ what birth is→ what could happen→ what interventions exist
All important…but it’s missing the most practical part:
👉 What do I actually DO in my body to help this work?
What actually helps (simple + practical)
This is where things start to change.
When your body has:→ mobility→ alignment→ space in the pelvis
You’re giving your baby the best chance to move through labour more easily.
This looks like:→ simple daily movement→ positions that open different parts of the pelvis→ knowing how to move during labour
Not random exercises.Not guessing.
👉 A simple, clear plan.
This is exactly what we teach
This is a huge part of what we do in my antenatal classes in Auckland.
Not just:“What birth is…”
But:👉 what to actually do👉 how to move👉 how your partner helps you👉 how to stay calm when it gets intense
Because when you understand what your body is doingand how to work with it…
everything feels different.
If you haven’t been doing this yet — you’re not behind.
Most people haven’t.
But once you know, it’s actually really simple to start.
If you want to feel calm, confident, and actually know what to do in labour…
Come to one of our antenatal classes in Auckland I’ll walk you through it step-by-step.

FAQ
When should I start preparing my body for birth?
Ideally from the second trimester, but it’s never too late to start. Even small changes can make a big difference.
Do I need to be “fit” to have an easier birth?
No — it’s not about fitness. It’s about movement, alignment, and knowing how to work with your body.
What kind of movements help during labour?
Positions that open the pelvis, encourage baby’s positioning, and help you stay comfortable and in control.
Do you teach this in your antenatal classes?
Yes — this is a core part of our one-day antenatal classes in Auckland. We focus on practical, real-life tools you can actually use.
