Postpartum Recovery: What to expect by Donna, Antenatal Classes Auckland expert.

New parents with newborn baby at a Antenatal Classes Auckland

Hey mama-to-be! 👋

So, you’ve done the hard part—grown a little human inside of you and made it through the birth. High five, queen! But what happens now that baby is here? Let’s talk about the next phase of your journey: postpartum recovery—the bit that no one tells you much about but trust me, it's just as important. Don't worry, I'm here to be your birth bestie and guide you through it all, so you'll feel ready, informed, and in control of what comes next.

1. Your Body’s Healing Process

First off, let’s be real. Your body has just done something incredible! It’s normal to feel a bit like you’ve been hit by a truck (or two), but it’s also important to give yourself grace. Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body needs time to heal. Expect some bleeding, cramping (hello, afterbirth pains!), and tenderness. Your uterus is shrinking back to its pre-baby size and that takes a little time—kind of like your muscles getting sore after a workout but on a whole new level.

Pro tip: Keep those comfy, stretchy clothes around and don't be afraid to ask your midwife or GP about what pain relief you can use if needed.

2. Rest, But Also Move!

Now, I know everyone will tell you to “rest, rest, rest,” and that’s true. But here’s the thing—they don’t mean you should be a couch potato. Gentle movement, like a short walk or a bit of stretching (I’ve got some postpartum yoga tricks up my sleeve, by the way), can help with circulation and mood. Plus, it's great for recovery. Just take it easy—you've earned it!

And yes, your sleep will be interrupted (I see you, 2 a.m. feeds), but rest when you can. Sneak in naps when baby naps if possible, and don’t be a hero. If you have help around, use it! Your recovery is just as important as baby’s needs right now.

3. Your Emotions Might Be All Over the Place

You’ve probably heard of the baby blues—totally normal! Your hormones are dropping after the birth and your body is trying to find its balance. One moment you’re looking at your baby, heart full of love, and the next, you might be in tears over something as small as putting on a clean pair of socks. It’s okay, we’ve all been there.

But listen up—if you find those feelings aren’t easing after a couple of weeks or if you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out. Postnatal depression is more common than you might think, and there is no shame in asking for help. You’re never alone in this, and talking it out can make all the difference.

4. Pelvic Floor, Baby!

You’ve probably heard about the pelvic floor muscles by now, but have you given them much thought? They’ve done a lot of work during pregnancy and birth, and now is the time to strengthen them up again. This will help with any bladder issues and set you up for success down the track.

You don’t need to start on this straight away—listen to your body—but when you’re ready, I can guide you through some simple pelvic floor exercises (in our classes and postnatal yoga sessions) that will help you feel like yourself again.

5. Nurture YOU, Not Just Baby

It's easy to get lost in the world of nappies, feeding, and baby cuddles, but mama, you matter too! Make sure you’re eating well (get those snacks prepped ahead of time if you can!), staying hydrated, and giving yourself some grace. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. When you're well, you're better equipped to care for that little bundle of joy.

And don’t forget, postpartum care isn’t just about your body. Your mind and emotions are on a wild ride too. If you’re feeling off or just need a space to talk, I offer birth trauma recovery sessions where we can chat about any lingering emotions or challenges. Whether it was a rough birth or you just need to process everything, I’m here to help you through it.
