The Truth About Postpartum Recovery: What No One Tells You! By Donna - Antenatal Classes Auckland

So, you’re getting ready to meet your little one—exciting, right? But let’s talk about something most people skim over: postpartum recovery. Yes, you’ll be basking in newborn cuddles and that baby smell, but your body and mind will be on a journey of their own. Don’t worry, though; I’m here to help you prepare, not scare you. Let’s dive into the truths about postpartum recovery that no one tells you, with the tips and tricks to make it easier.

1. Your Body Will Feel Like It Ran a Marathon (Because It Kind of Did!)

Birth is a full-body workout times ten. Whether you have a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body will be sore, swollen, and tired. Don’t be surprised if sitting down feels like an Olympic event in the early days. Ice packs, supportive undies, and all the cushions are your new best friends.

But here’s the good news: your body is amazing. It just grew and delivered a human! Give it the rest and nourishment it needs, and it’ll bounce back in its own time.

2. Your Emotions Might Feel Like a Rollercoaster

You’ve heard about the baby blues, but did anyone tell you how intense those hormonal shifts can feel? One minute, you’ll be staring at your baby, overwhelmed with love, and the next, you might feel like crying because your tea went cold.

It’s all normal, and it’s okay to ask for help if you’re struggling. Surround yourself with people who understand—partners, friends, and yes, me! I’ve been there, and I can guide you through those tricky emotions. As a pre & postnatal therapist i have seen and heard it all, you are not alone. Your mood should start to lift by day 10, if not please seek help.

3. Sleep Will Become a Precious (and Rare) Commodity

Everyone tells you, “Sleep when the baby sleeps!” But what they don’t say is your baby’s sleep schedule might look like a 24-hour rave. Sleepless nights can hit hard, so stock up on easy snacks, accept all offers of help, and remember—it’s just a phase.

In our antenatal classes, I cover realistic strategies for managing those early weeks, what are you going to do to get you through this period? Trust me, a little preparation goes a long way.

4. Breastfeeding Isn’t Always Natural or Easy

If you’re planning to breastfeed, know this: it’s a skill both you and your baby need to learn. Some mums take to it right away; others need time, patience, and support.

Cracked nipples? Engorgement? Latch issues? We talk about it all in my classes, so you’ll know exactly what to do and who to call if you need extra support.

5. Your Relationships Might Shift

Bringing a baby into your life can shake things up. Whether it’s with your partner, friends, or even yourself, there’s a new dynamic to navigate. And that’s okay! Open communication and a bit of humour can work wonders. Your partner is not a mind reader, talk to them, tell them how you are feeling, what your needs are.

6. You’ll Need a Village—And That’s Not Just a Cliché

Postpartum recovery is not a solo mission. Accept help, lean on your support network, and don’t hesitate to ask for what you need.

My antenatal classes aren’t just about preparing for birth; they’re about building your confidence, connecting with other parents, and giving you the tools to thrive during postpartum.
